Mortality vs the Divine
The Slugfest to end all Slugfests
What if the gods
of all religions and myths got together every thousand or so years to decide
the fate of humanity? What if the most well-known figures in human history
duked it out against the gods?
This is the
question that authors Fukui Takumi and Umemura Shinya answer in blood-curdling detail,
with the exemplary work of artist Aji Chika displaying the weight and insanity
behind each punch! The premise is simple yet brought to life in beautiful
artwork and tense storytelling, though not one to shy away from conventions that
permeate most manga. Such as incredibly strong beings demonstrating weakness in
front of hilarious circumstances or grotesquely exaggerated faces when faced with
slight inconveniences.
Now granted this
is a first for the blog, I will not go into detail in the first chapter, instead
take this as an invitation to a manga that is purely a “tournament arc”, think
like The Dark Tournament in Yu Yu Hakusho or the Sports Festival in My Hero. Perhaps
some of the hypest moments in both respective series, seeing as it introduced
fan-favorite characters for both the villains and heroes.
To those who are
familiar with the fights in Baki, they will feel right at home with how the
fighters are drawn and how exaggerated at times the muscles contort as they
flex to the utmost limit of the panels on the page.
If you are looking
for a series that is ongoing and fills you with adrenaline from the very start,
I highly recommend Record of Ragnarok to bide your time over what seems to be
the actual end of times outside our homes.
