Transformers One: More than Meets the Eye Indeed

"More than meets the eye"

Usually, when I decide to take a moment to reflect and relax by myself, I play some video games or read manga with my feet up. But this time, I decided to take myself out on a self-love date. Heading down to the local movie theater, I wondered what was worth my time and saw this generic poster for a new Transformers movie. Thinking that this was a safe choice and deciding how to spend two hours, I bought a ticket got some snacks, and got on my phone while the trailers played. Now, let me be honest, I was not at all excited for this movie, it just looked like a quick cash-grab with random celebrities lending their voices to what I assumed were generic character tropes...I was pleasantly convinced otherwise.

From the introduction of Orion Pax and D-16 as two best friends who would do anything for the other if need be, the world-building, and introducing the lore of the previous Primes as these near unbeatable warriors in their prime made for a mix of emotions I was not expecting during a Transformers movie. The premise is simple, Orion Pax, D-16, Elita-1, and B-127 go on a journey that takes them from the underground metropolis of Iacon to the wild surface of the planet of Cybertron searching for the Matrix of Leadership. Along the way we see the eventual falling out due to ideologies on how to handle a despot, Orion wants to inform the populace while D-16 wants to kill Sentinel Prime and usurp the throne. For those who have not watched the movie Orion and D-16 are Optimus Prime and Megatron respectively, and the way the movie and pacing build up to the eventual conflict is almost Shakespearian. There were moments where I asked myself: "Is this movie really aimed at kids?", the fight scenes though clearly among robots hold nothing back when it comes to utterly destroying each other and leaving scrap metal in the wake of the fight. The comedy is very hit or miss, which sucks considering they got Keegan Michael Key from Key and Peele fame. However the real standout was Brian Tyree Henry as D-16/Megatron, this dude was such a great presencestressed that I sincerely think he needs to be given more roles in voice acting. Going from stressed, friendly, and then tyrannically unhinged with sadness behind the gruffness, this made me view the character as the most complex of the entire movie.

Honestly, if you have the time to watch this fantastic movie in theaters, give it a chance and you will leave just as surprised as I did. The entire third act had me wondering where the ending was gonna end up. Are you a fan of the O.G. cartoons? Love compelling betrayal stories? Just want to have a blast at the movies? Watch Transformers One and hopefully we get a sequel.

Take care y'all, and peace!
