Shiba Inu Rooms is a Spooky Delight

What's It About?

This is a story as old as time, hear me out, you just gained independence and managed to find an apartment that comes fully furnished. Not only that, but it has all the modern amenities and great localization in town. All of that rolled into $48.00 a month...but wait, what's the catch? Is it the landlord? No, she's a sweet old lady. Is it the neighbor? No, they seem harmless enough. What could it be then? Hmm, might be the fact that the building is haunted by ghosts. Not just any ghosts mind you, but the fluffiest ghosts you ever laid your eyes on...dogs!

When Did It Start?

This new comedy series began serialization on Shonen Jump just last week and centers on the duo of Kori Momose, a 17-year-old who is "horror" numb, and Mu-Chan the shiba inu who haunts her apartment. The writing shines with comedic timing that caught me off guard more times than I could count, most comedy manga that I've read were very hit-or-miss for me, but the moment I started reading the first couple of pages the author had me hooked. Shonen Jump has been looking for new mainstay titles from different genres to eventually take the place of works like Jujutsu Kaisen and My Hero Academia which are slated to end this year. Luckily, they are building a robust new cast of heavy hitters that are sure to lead the publication in a new direction in the coming years.

What's The Endgame, If Any?

As of writing this post, the series has 5 chapters available to read on the Shonen Jump App and website. From the first chapter, we learn that if the dogs receive too much love and affection they will ascend to the afterlife content with how they were treated. Upon learning this fact from a neighbor who accidentally gave one of his dogs too many pats on the head and belly rubs, only to be surprised to see a celestial light engulf the spirit and lift it gently to the afterlife, this prompts Kori to make it a goal to shower her new pet/roommate with different types of affection in hopes of getting the apartment all to herself. Apart from that, there is no clear endgame if any, granted the series is still in its infancy so time will tell what the author has in store for the series as the weeks go on.

What Can You Expect?

  • A heartfelt comedy that makes you laugh and wish nothing but the best for both Kori and Mu-chan.
  • Art style that blends innocent round features on the characters and paneling that comfortably leads the readers' eyes to the next scene.
  • Bear in mind, that all the dogs that live in the apartment complex are ghosts, so if knowing later on how it was that these dogs died is something you are not comfortable with take this into consideration and read at your own discretion.
  • The comedy relies on both visual gags and wordplay that respects the time the reader invests in the series.

In Closing

Shiba Inu Rooms promises to be a fantastic addition to the growing roster of Shonen Jump with its cute characters, comedic style, and emotional setting. Though still uncertain with the way most new series tend to be canceled before even reaching the 20-chapter mark, this title has made a name for itself solely on its endearing nature and mature take on how to deal with obstacles thrown at us in life. Couple that with the spooky backdrop of certain spirits possessing humans without their knowledge, exorcists that seem more in line with Ghostbusters, and a delinquent who strives to be the perfect neighbor and you have a supporting cast that perfectly sums up what it would be like to live in a haunted apartment complex, which ensures that this new manga is a spooky delight you do not want to miss out on. As always, thank you for taking the time to read this post, and have a great day!

  1. Qué random. Nunca había pensado en un haunted story, pero de mascotas.

  2. This seems like an awesome manga to read! And if you think it's one of the possible heavy hitters later on, that sounds like a great investment of time then.
