My Faves of the State of Play
So the State of Play happened yesterday...
Every time I sit down to watch a State of Play, I'm filled with the same three emotions:
- Meh (Boredom)
- Ehh (Indifference)
- Whoah, now what, for real?! (Excitement)
And the one they broadcast live yesterday February 12, 2025, was no different. Through a haze of boring AAA games that look the same and involve some shooty shooty pew pew, three managed to sweep me off my feet. These games took me out to dinner, listened to me, and made insightful questions about our future together.
Now without further ado, let's get this started!
When I was a kid, Digimon started airing around the same time as Pokemon hit its second season, and my god it changed me. It quickly became ingrained as one of the coolest shows and cast of characters my young brain had ever seen. As I grew, I consumed anime and video games, also currently getting into the TCG (Trading Card Game). So imagine my surprise when a new Digimon Story game was announced, and it looks so dope! During the trailer, there are glimpses of riding your Digimon like a mount, they also seem to be implementing something similar to the latest Pokemon games that involve seeing them out in the overworld and dungeons. Hopefully, that means no random battles. The line that has kept echoing in my head ever since the trailer dropped is: "Embark on a journey alongside gods, heroes, and monsters of bygone eras: the anomalies known as DIGIMON!" Imma be honest, that shit had no reason to go that hard. There is, however, a tinge of bittersweet sadness. Digimon Story Time Stranger is releasing on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and Steam. No love for the PS4 or Switch? Dang, here's to hoping it gets ported in a year or two.
For those who don't know, Lies of P is a souls-like game that takes heavy influence from both Bloodborne and the Pinocchio fairytale. Personally, never having played the game I was blown away by how quick and aggressive the combat was in this trailer. For a moment I swore I was watching Demon Slayer or something, man. Shit was insane in all the best ways. Lies of P Overture is a DLC that serves as a prequel which is perfect for those who have yet to play the base game (like me). Available on PS5 and PS4.
Tides of Annihilation is creepy, weird, surreal, terrifying, fantastic, and drop-dead gorgeous to look at. Those were all the emotions I felt while watching the trailer. The story centers around Gwendolyn as she sets out to confront massive colossal monsters in both modern London and ancient Avalon. You read that right, if like me you were also an English major or simply love Arthurian legends then you know damn well where this story is drawing its inspiration from. The combat looks fast and frenetic making me wanna dust off my old copies of Devil May Cry for the PS2. The boss fights look incredible and look to challenge you to the point of breaking your controllers. Releasing sometime soon for PS5 and PS5 Pro.
In Closing
Like most State of Plays, I was mostly bored and about to implode into myself like a dying star. But these three titles lifted my spirits up and made me happy to play video games again. As always, thank you so much for taking the time out of your day to read this post. You a real one, and I appreciate that. Imma post the trailers again below in case you guys wanna check them out again.
